Introduction

It was originally monks from the East who moved into the caves, which were carved out of the basalt tuff when the Abbey was founded. This hermit colony, unique in Europe, was in use until the 15th century, and although several cave rooms collapsed, it is still worth visiting. You can experience for a moment a puritan, monastic life in close union with nature.
