Introduction

All you find here today are the remains of a rampart, but once the castle of Békavár, built on the island of the river Zala, stood here. The chapel was named after St. György, hence the other name of the place. The stone castle, which served as a defence in the Middle Ages, was demolished in the 18th century by order of emperor Leopold I, but the sloping hills have somewhat preserved the shape of the former fortress.
